(May 28) Probably the best mod for CTP, Celestial Daws's 'Play CTP as it Should Be' Mod was upgraded to version 4. The bigest changes from v3 are:
'i) a modified Trade system designed to encourage Trade;
ii) a revamp of Governments in order to allow for more interesting choices between them;
iii) the improvement of Science buildings to make the Science v Gold decision more valid;
iv) the primacy of Air Power to make the Modern Age more interesting; and
v) Great Library updates for all the changes and entries for all the new units and advances.

STATUS REPORT 052799
(May 27) John Heinecke posted on our forums a 'Status Report' on what the ctp team is doing these days:
'- International Patches: they are still closing bugs. Best guess for release of German, French and Italian patches is mid-to-late next week, with Spanish to follow a few days later.
- Graphics tool: we are releasing the graphics tool very soon (in a few days). You will be able to modify unit art, terrain, animations, goods, etc. The tool will, like our other scenario documents, be unsupported by our Customer Support group- so back up everything that you modify.
- Demo: the demo is in final testing and should be ready for release soon.
- 2nd patch: we're monitoring feedback about the first patch, and once the demo is done, we'll take a look and see what needs to be addressed in patch 2.'

FOR THE ADVANCED PLAYER..
(May 27) Brad Santos, one of ctp's designers(Dr No in our irc chats), give some of his personal strategies for the higher levels of ctp in the latest 'Developer's Corner'.

CALLING MODS
(May 26) A special news item for two parts of our CTP section. First, the 'Callings' section waits for your CTP stories. Two stories were added today, by Merlin and Atahualpa. If you had a.. 'calling' send it to markg@apolyton.net or dan@apolyton.net. In the Modification section we have two pages on modifing the 'empty queue dialog box, and overriding game files in scenario creating. We're also waiting for your well-documented modification discoveries.

HOLDING ON
(May 25) CTP is holding on to a good showing on Top Ten Ranking in PC Data's Hits Lists for the week of May 9-15. In the Games Category it is sitting comfortably at #4, on the position as the week before. When taking into account All Categories, CTP replaces a respectable 9th, just below SC3000.

MAPS!
(May 25) One of the things CTP lacked when it came out was a world map. Activision released one later but it didn't satisfy many people. Fans have made some new ones though: a World Map for 24 civs and 8 or less civs by Zaz, and a Europe one by Domk.
By the way, two popular files were updated today, the Civ2 Diplomatic Photo Modpack and the Real Leader Picture Mod

CIV IS GETING SMARTER..
(May 25) According to the results of our 8th poll, CTP's AI is an improvement over the ones in previous civ games. The improvement isn't a very big one though. The exact results(on a total of 809 votes) were: 'Perfect' 3%, 'Very Good' 18%, 'Not great, but better than Civ2' 34%, 'Same as Civ2' 14%, 'Worse than Civ2' 23%, 'The worst I've ever seen' 4% and 'I don't care, I play multiplayer only' 1%.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED
(May 19) The first CTP patch (v1.0) is finally here! Not much more is needed to be said, except to get it here. Read the complete readme file and the new editor readme file. It will not only update the English versions of CTP, but it will also update the previously released Beta version of the Map Editor.
Note: This patch isn't for the Linux port (Loki will be producing that sometime in the near future), nor is it for the German, French, Italian, or Spanish PC versions of CTP -- they will be released shortly.

LAST WEEK'S SALES
(May 18) More sales lists from PC Data. For the week of May 2-8, CTP dropped from the 3rd position to the 4th, again behind SC3000. The first two places were taken from Baldur's Gate: Tales Of Sword Coast Add On ($27) and Roller Coaster Tycoon (only $24).

HOW SOON IS 'SOON'?
(May 17) Activision made a short announcement on the official CTP page about the progress of the patch. 'The Civ: CTP patch is still undergoing quality assurance testing, but we expect to release it soon.' How soon is 'soon', we don't know..

THE PERFECT POSITION
(May 17) What's the best position one can have in a Sales List? CTP was the #1 selling game in it's first month, taking the spot from SC3000. CTP was also notably 6th in the All-Categories list.

(May 16) Loki has published two support FAQs for its users of the Linux port of CTP. Here is the Technical version, which is an accompaniment to their General one. Both were last updated just yesterday!

LINUX VERSION IS SHIPPING
(May 14) It's true! The Linux port of CTP, produced by Loki Entertainment, is now shipping from Game Cellar, and no doubt other distributors will soon have their store shelves lined with it. Considering not only the treasured Civilization genre history, but also the fact that this is the first commercially available Linux game on the market, they're sure to sell like hot cakes! EUROPEAN AVAILABILITY
(May 14) With CTP for the Linux platform now out in North America, it's only a matter of time until it hits the European stores. SuSE issued the following important statement on their website just yesterday:
'The agreement covers all European countries.. the first big European retailer to pre-order Civilization: Call to Power through SuSE is Media Markt, a German retailer with 30 percent market share, according to Roland Dyroff, chief executive officer of SuSE GmbH. Lots of other retail outlets that will sell the game in Europe can be found at http://www.suse.de/reseller. The European distribution agreement is effective immediately'.

GET IT. IT'S WORTH IT.
(May 12) What better way(for Activision) to close a review. Slashdot, one of the best linux sites, reviewed the Lnux port of CTP. The reviewer, a old-time civ fan ends the review with a comparison(in his opinion always) with smac: 'Alpha Centauri is truly revolutionary, but Civ:CTP is incredible. Alpha Centauri is the Shakespeare to Civ:CTP's Ben Jonson. My bottom line: Get it. It's worth. I give it a 29 on a scale of 13-32.'

STILL ON THE TOP 3..
(May 12) On the PC Data weekly sales listing, CTP is surpassed by SC3000, but keeps the third position for a second week. On the first position, Disney's 'Bugs Life: Active Play'(at a price of $19). As usual, the list is based on number of units sold in the US.

WINNING CTP
(May 11) If there is one man who can help you win a game, it surely is its' designer! William Westwater gives his strategy combined in the words 'river, ocean, mountain, stack, bombard'. Check it out in the second article of the Developer's Corner.

ONE MORE REVIEW
(May 11) If you though the ctp reviews are over, you're wrong. The latest was from 'Rainbow-PCM Reviews On-Line'. The reviewer had mixed feelings from the beggining. 'There are so many things we like about this latest version of what is probably the greatest turn-based strategy game ever made that its almost a sin to nit-pick . . . but maybe, just maybe, it isn't nit-picking after all.', to the end 'Why aren't we wild about C:CTP? I don't know, but it needs something. Perhaps the patches will fix some of the problems. In the meantime, for all these complaints, I am happily playing the game. I just wish it had a better feel.' Let's see how the patch will affect critics' opinions..

HANDEYE LIKES IT
(May 11) Reviewer James Brief of HandyEye.com has taken a likely to Loki Entertainment's Linux port of CTP. In his review, he makes no mistake in letting his feelings known.
'Civilization: Call to Power for Linux is not simply the newest chapter in the vastly popular Civilization series. It does not have the Sid Meier seal of quality that has been telling gamers for years that this game will keep you up for hours at a time and shock you when you notice that it is 5:18 AM and you have to get up in 42 minutes. Thankfully, due to the perseverance of the port specialists, artists and composers at Activision and Linux porter Loki Entertainment, Civ:CTP is one of the most beautiful games to come out since, well CivII'!
Brief goes onto say that CTP 'is one of the most engrossing games in years. The 'let's make a Quake clone' syndrome which seemed to plague the industry in 1997-98 is over. Civ:CTP is as original as late 1998 titles like Halflife and Oddworld, yet it still harkens back to its richCivilization ancestry while introducing entirely new features.
Overall, the pros heavily outweigh the minimal cons. Civ:CTP is a wonderful game which you will be playing over and over'. Happy Civ'ing!

FEEL GOOD REVIEW
(May 10) John Kanellopoulos of Games Overdose has stated that CTP 'is by far the best strategy game I have ever played in my 15-year gaming experience. It has excellent graphics, for the category, ideal music and fantastic gameplay'.
Kanellopoulos also compliments the accompanying manual. 'Ideal work coming from a company that has earned my respect in this area. The 100+ pages manual, printed on quality paper, reminded me of the old pen and paper games where the manuals were of major importance'.
How does he sum it all up? 'The game is a real value for your money. Dozens of hours spend joyfully, managing the fate of your tribe from the struggle for survival to the fight for dominance. If you are a strategy-game player go out and buy it without giving it a second thought. If you are not, it is high time that you started. A superb game that will stay in my heart for a long time'.
Chalk it up with a overall 94% grade, and you've got one satisfied customer.

DIFFERENT FLAVOURED CIV
(May 10) That's essentially how Editor Cameron D. of Hotgames.com feels about Activision's entrance product into the Civilization genre. The review only scratches the surface, so don't go looking for new meat to chew on here. Nevertheless, it gives you a general overview of the product.
'You'll immediately notice the changes made to the user interface.. for instance, you can adjust how much of your city's production and labor goes towards academia, food or the military. You can even queue buildings and construction, making life a lot easier in the long run.
Is it better than the classic Civilization II? Well, no, but it's not worse, either. It's certainly different enough to give old hands something new to play into the long hours. If you're not afraid of trying something new, we think Call To Power will let you live out your megalomaniac dreams'.

NEWS FROM LOKI
(May 7) Loki Entertainment has recently redesigned and updated their website with some new information for all you anxious Linux Civ'ers out there!
'Contrary to our earlier news flash, we will be shipping version 1.0. Customers can download next week a patch for 1.1. This patch will fix bugs, provide some UI enhancements and provide network compatibility between the Linux and Windows versions. We apologize for any confusion, and hope you'll appreciate receiving the 1.0 product now, rather than waiting another few weeks for version 1.1 to be mass-produced'.
In addition, after reading several discussion threads on the port, Loki has clarified what is being shipped at this point.
'We need to clarify that we are shipping the English version this week to all pre-orders. Next week we begin shipping the English version in mass quantities to the retail stores. The French and German versions will be next, followed in a few weeks by the Italian and Spanish. Apologies for any inconvenience (or rabidity) this may cause'.

If this comes true, CTP will be one of the very few games to be played on such a variety of machines and operatings systems. Many thanks to Kevin who informed us.

CTP(with a listed price of $39) is on the third place, surpassed by two widely known $20 games: MP Top Gun: Hornet's Nest(Hasbro) and Luffwaffe Commander(Learning Company). Following on the 4th place is SimCity 3000. As always, the list is 'based on units sold by thirteen retail chains, representing more than 57% of the U.S. market' as PC Data notes.

(May 3) Our Civ2 for Mac section had it first. Westlake Interactive will develop the Mac port of C:CTP. Peter griffin text to speech voice. As it was announced earlier this year, the game will be published by MacSoft. According to WI's announcement, the mac port of C:CTP will ship this Christmas. If you can't wait, Loki will be soon releasing the PPC binaries for the linux port. :)

We are planning on releasing the art file format or some sort of graphics editor soon after the patch so that players can modify or import their own graphics into the game. More details will be released as this plan firms up.
